What is a forward deployed engineer? And how does an SME get one?

A forward deployed engineer, or FDE, is an engineer who works inside the customer's business instead of behind a product. Palantir invented the role, and in 2026 it went mainstream: job postings grew over 5,000% in eighteen months, AWS announced a $1 billion organisation to embed engineers directly in customer teams, and Microsoft followed with a multi-billion dollar unit doing the same. The pitch, in AWS's own words: ship AI systems in days rather than months.

Why the role exploded

Because AI projects rarely fail on theory. They fail on integration: messy data, permissions, edge cases, workflows that exist in someone's head, teams who never adopt the tool. A demo can't fix any of that from the outside. So the biggest companies in the world stopped shipping software over the wall and started shipping people, embedded where the work actually happens.

The catch for smaller businesses

Everything above is built for enterprises. AWS and Microsoft embed engineers into accounts spending millions. Hiring your own is worse: FDE salaries track the top of the engineering market, the role is too new to vet from a CV, and the hiring cycle takes months. The model is right. The route to it is priced for someone else.

The SME version: an embedded AI Architect

An embedded AI Architect is the same principle at SME scale: a vetted expert deployed into your team in days, building in the tools you already run, accountable for what ships. The difference from the enterprise version is scope and price. One person coordinates AI across sales, operations and delivery for a 5 to 100 person business, on a rolling month, at a flat fee instead of an enterprise contract.

What "forward deployed" looks like in month one

• Week one: inside the business, mapping where hours and revenue leak, value plan in writing.
• Week two: first systems live, usually pipeline or reporting, in your stack and your accounts.
• Weeks three and four: adoption, iteration, and a day 30 review against the plan.

That is the whole idea the giants are spending billions to prove, available without being a giant. If the market keeps teaching your competitors to want engineers in the building, the cheapest time to get yours is before they do.
